作为微软今年的重头戏，Windows Longhorn Server (或者更准确的名称Windows Server Code Name “Longhorn”)一直颇受关注。近日，继4月初发布版本号为build 6001-16497-070330-1720的Windows Longhorn Server CTP (技术预览版)后，微软释出了最新的Windows Longhorn Server Beta 3，任何人只要具有或注册一个Live ID，即可下载、测试，这也意味着Longhorn Server距正式推出已为期不远了。
近日，又传出消息，Windows Longhorn Server将沿用上一代产品Windows Server 2003的命名原则，正式命名为Windows Server 2008。
这也意味着同桌面系统的Windows 2000 => Windows XP => Windows Vista那样，微软的服务器产品序列将为Windows 2000 => Windows 2003 => Windows 2008。
目前，微软TechNet上Windows Longhorn Server Beta 3的下载页面中名称已经改为Windows Server 2008 Beta 3。
Windows Longhorn Server 与微软上一代的服务器产品，Windows Server 2003，之间的关系，基本类似于Windows Vista同Windows XP。根据微软的官方说法，相对于Windows Server 2003，Windows Longhorn Server不仅带来许多新的功能，也在虚拟化技术、更强的管理、安全与控制等方面有了极大的改进。
目前微软提供的Windows Longhorn Server Beta 3包括以下版本，估计这也是未来Windows Longhorn Server正式发布时也将采取这样的分类方式：
Windows Longhorn Server Beta 3 Standard Edition (标准版，64位或32位)
Windows Longhorn Server Beta 3 Enterprise Edition (企业版，64位或32位)
Windows Longhorn Server Beta 3 DataCenter Edition (数据中心版，64位或32位)
Windows Longhorn Server Beta 3 Web Edition (Web服务器版，64位或32位)
以及针对Intel Itanium的Windows Longhorn Server Beta 3 Itanium-based Edition
